There’s something about autumn that gets under my skin in the loveliest way — the crisp air, the crunch of leaves underfoot, the way the light turns everything golden in the late afternoon. I’ve been designing a new autumn crochet pattern every year for as long as I can remember, and this year’s addition, the Walk Into Autumn Blanket, might just be one of my favourites yet.
This overlay mosaic crochet blanket pattern combines rich, textured detail with a cosy autumn colour palette, making it the perfect crochet project for the cooler months ahead.
Designing this one took a little more time and patience than usual. I originally planned it as a strip-style design, the way many of my mosaic patterns come together — worked in horizontal sections, pieced along the way. But as the motifs began to emerge, something shifted. The vertical lines simply looked better. So I let the design lead the way, and I’m so glad I did.
Choosing Autumn Yarn Colours: A Stash-Busting Shade of Brown
If you’d asked me at the very start, I would have told you this blanket was destined to be worked in that deep, rich pink some leaves turn just before they fall. I could picture it perfectly in my head. But I gave myself a stern (admittedly, slightly reluctant) talking-to instead.
I’m on a bit of a mission at the moment to shrink my yarn stash. Partly because I need to reclaim some space — three kids and their ever-expanding piles of stuff have a way of eating into every spare corner of a house, lol. But also because I’m trying to gently shift away from acrylic yarn towards more natural, environmentally friendly fibres, and using up what I already have felt like the right place to start.
So, I raided my stash, and settled on a range of beautiful browns instead. And I’m thrilled to say I managed to crochet about 90% of this blanket entirely from stash! Sometimes the best design decisions are the ones you talk yourself into, not out of.

5 Fun Facts About Nature in Fall 🍁
While I was working away on all those cosy brown rows, I found myself falling down a bit of a rabbit hole learning about autumn itself. Here are a few facts I loved:
- Leaves don’t actually turn colour — they reveal it. The green fades as chlorophyll breaks down, unmasking the yellows and oranges that were there all along, hidden beneath the green all summer.
- Squirrels can remember the location of thousands of buried nuts — though not always perfectly, which is actually how quite a few new trees get their start each year.
- Some trees “talk” to each other in autumn. As leaves fall and nutrients return to the soil, trees are believed to share resources through underground fungal networks, sometimes nicknamed the “wood wide web.”
- Migrating birds use the shortening days as their cue to leave, not the temperature. Even a warm autumn won’t delay a flock that’s sensing the changing length of daylight.
- Acorn production varies wildly year to year, in a phenomenon called “masting.” Some autumns bring a bumper crop, thought to be nature’s way of overwhelming hungry squirrels so enough acorns survive to sprout.

- All rows are worked from right to left.
- Usually the yarn colour changes with every row i.e. you ONLY use ONE colour per row – you ignore any changes in colour of the chart squares, they simply show what the final design will look like. You will need to fo at the end of every row.
- Every row contains the same number of stitches (st).
- The first and last st in every row is a single crochet (sc).
- The first st is indicated by a square with a letter e.g. ‘A’ or ‘B’ in the chart.
- The final st is indicated by a square with a ‘+’ in the chart.
- Back loop only sc (BLOsc) are indicated by a square without a ‘X’ in the chart.
- Front loop only double crochet (FLOdc) are indicated by a square with a ‘X’ in the chart.
- All FLOdc are worked into the same-coloured stitch two rows down.

- Colour A (dark brown, parchment, mocha, and grist) – apx. 2083m/2280 yds
- Colour B (white) – apx. 1507m/1651 yds
- The yardage provided above is based on a single-sided blanket.

- Safe Sleeping Guidance: Blankets should be tucked no higher than the baby’s shoulders, and their feet should be placed at the end of the crib or bed. This minimizes the risk of the baby’s face becoming covered by loose bedding.

Handling Tools Safely
- When working with sharp tools such as scissors, sewing needles, or crochet hooks, handle them carefully and keep them out of reach of children and pets.
- Accidental cuts or injuries can occur if tools are not used properly. Always store tools safely when not in use, ensuring they are secured in a suitable storage container or area.
