Seaside Swimwear Mosaic Motif - Crochet Pattern

Section 3 - Great Summer Mosaic CAL

I was absolutely thrilled to be invited to contribute to another of Erin’s CALs! I’ve been lucky enough to work with her several times over the years on collaborative projects hosted by Juniper and Oakes and Elimee Designs (see below), and it’s always such a joy to be part of these creative community makes. There’s something really special about seeing a blanket grow one designer at a time, with so many different ideas coming together into one cohesive (and beautiful!) project.

This year’s Great Summer Mosaic CAL was no exception, and as soon as I heard the theme, I knew exactly where my inspiration would come from.

My section, Seaside Swimwear, was inspired by nostalgic memories of childhood visits to the beach - especially the many trips I was lucky enough to take to Cornwall, where I had family. Those days were wonderfully simple: long stretches of reading on the sand (I’ve always got a book on the go), paddling in the sea, and lounging in that year’s favourite swimwear while soaking up the sun.

So when the CAL theme was announced, swimwear felt like the perfect fit. Playful, nostalgic, and full of summer personality, this motif brings together two swimsuits and a bikini in classic mosaic style to capture those carefree beach-day memories.

5 Fun Facts About British Beaches

  1. The UK has over 7,700 miles of coastline – more than enough for a lifetime of beach exploring.

  2. Some British beaches are “hidden deserts” – places like Holkham Beach in Norfolk have vast sandy expanses that feel almost desert-like at low tide.

  3. Cornwall has the most Blue Flag beaches in the UK – awarded for cleanliness, safety, and environmental standards.

  4. Many UK beaches are constantly changing shape due to tides, storms, and shifting sandbanks.

  5. The coldest recorded sea temperature around the UK can drop to around 6°C in winter - definitely not swimwear weather unless you’re very brave (and in a wetsuit)!

What is a CAL?

A CAL, or Crochet Along, is a fabulous community event where crocheters across the globe work on the same pattern simultaneously. It unfolds in stages, providing the perfect opportunity to share your progress and inspire fellow crafters.

New to Overlay Mosaic Crochet?

Don’t worry, simply start out by watching this video tutorial which covers the basics, or read the summary below.

  • All rows are worked from right to left.

  • Usually the yarn colour changes with every row i.e. you ONLY use ONE colour per row – you ignore any changes in colour of the chart squares, they simply show what the final design will look like. You will need to fo at the end of every row.

  • Every row contains the same number of stitches (st).

  • The first and last st in every row is a single crochet (sc).

    • The first st is indicated by a square with a letter e.g. ‘A’ or ‘B’ in the chart.

    • The final st is indicated by a square with a ‘+’ in the chart.

  • Back loop only sc (BLOsc) are indicated by a square without a ‘X’ in the chart.

  • Front loop only double crochet (FLOdc) are indicated by a square with a ‘X’ in the chart.

  • All FLOdc are worked into the same-coloured stitch two rows down.

  • The red lines on the chart indicate the repeating section.
