There’s something truly magical about a woodland walk - the crunch of leaves underfoot, the dappled sunlight through the trees, and the glimpses of wildlife going about their day. The Britain’s Wild Heart Blanket CAL is inspired by my love of these quiet, nature-filled moments, as well as my childhood memories of reading The Animals of Farthing Wood by Colin Dann. That story, with its brave and determined woodland creatures, left a lasting impression on me, and I’ve woven that love of nature into this cosy, nostalgic design.

This blanket is created using the corner-to-corner (C2C) stitch, bringing together motifs that capture the essence of Britain’s woodland. Whether you’re new to C2C crochet or a long-time fan, this CAL is a wonderful way to build your skills while creating something truly special. Plus, crochet-alongs are a fantastic way to stay motivated, connect with fellow makers, and enjoy the journey as we work through the design together.

I’ve well and truly caught the CAL bug this year, and I’ll be hosting four in total! The first - The Months of the Year Blanket - is already underway, and Britain’s Wild Heart is the second. With two more CALs still to come, there’s plenty more crochet fun ahead!

Curious to know more about the design, how it works, and how you can join in the fun? Keep reading – this is a CAL you won’t want to miss!

What is a CAL?

A CAL, or Crochet Along, is a fabulous community event where crocheters across the globe work on the same pattern simultaneously. It unfolds in stages, providing the perfect opportunity to share your progress and inspire fellow crafters.

How will this CAL work?

  • Starting April 7, 2025, a new section of the blanket will be released every Monday and Friday.

  • The FREE graph for each section will be available below, or you can watch the video tutorials over on YouTube.

  • Want it all at once? The FULL eBook, including written and graphical instructions for the entire pattern.

  • The CAL will be hosted in the Elimee Designs Facebook Group, where you can connect with fellow crocheters, share your progress, and get tips from the designers.

  • Sign up for the Elimee Designs email list to receive email reminders when each new section is released – never miss a step on your crochet journey!

The Pattern

Materials

Some alternative yarn suggestions:

Difficulty Level

Advanced beginner.

Gauge

Each (25 by 25 dc C2C block) motif is apx. 40cm/15.75 inches square – which will give a final blanket size of apx. 130cm/51 inches square.

Part 1 - Badger Motif (available now)

Badgers are one of Britain’s most iconic nocturnal animals, living in underground burrow systems called setts. They are highly social creatures, often sharing their setts with multiple generations of family members. Their thick fur and strong claws make them excellent diggers, and they play a vital role in maintaining the woodland ecosystem.

Part 2 - Bluebell Motif (available now)

British woodlands in spring are transformed into breathtaking carpets of bluebells, a sight that has inspired folklore and poetry for centuries. Over half of the world’s bluebell population is found in the UK, making them a treasured wildflower. But beware - according to old myths, hearing a bluebell ring means you’ve been summoned by fairies!

Part 3 - Owl Motif (available now)

Owls are silent hunters, thanks to the unique fringed edges of their feathers, which muffle sound as they fly. The tawny owl, one of the most common in Britain, is the one behind the familiar "twit-twoo" call, which is actually a duet between a male and female. With incredible night vision and sharp talons, these birds are perfectly adapted for nocturnal hunting.

Part 4 - Deer Motif (available now)

Britain is home to six species of deer, but the red deer and roe deer are the only ones native to the country. Red deer, the largest, have been part of British landscapes since the Ice Age! During autumn, males engage in dramatic rutting battles, locking antlers in fierce displays of strength to win over a mate.

Part 5 - Heron Motif (coming April 21st 2025)

The grey heron, often spotted standing motionless at the edge of lakes and rivers, is a master at catching fish. These elegant birds can strike with lightning-fast precision, spearing their prey with their sharp beaks. In flight, herons look prehistoric, folding their long necks into an S-shape and gliding with slow, powerful wingbeats.

Part 6 - Hedgehog Motif (coming April 25th 2025)

These beloved, spiky little creatures can roam over a mile a night in search of food! Hedgehogs are nature’s pest controllers, feasting on slugs, beetles, and other garden critters. Sadly, their numbers have declined in recent years, so wildlife-friendly gardens with hedgehog highways (small gaps in fences) can help them thrive.

Part 7 - Snowdrop Motif (available now)

Psst… this is my favourite flower!

Snowdrops are one of the first flowers to bloom in late winter, often pushing through the frost as a symbol of hope and renewal. In folklore, they’re seen as a sign of good luck, though some superstitions once warned against bringing them indoors. Their pure white petals and delicate nodding heads make them a true winter wonder.

Part 8 - Mushroom (available now)

The UK is home to thousands of mushroom species, from the classic red-and-white fly agaric (a fairy tale favorite) to the delicious and sought-after chanterelle. Some fungi glow in the dark - a phenomenon called bioluminescence! Mushrooms play a crucial role in breaking down organic material, helping to recycle nutrients in the forest.

Part 9 - Fox (coming May 5th 2025)

Clever and adaptable, the red fox thrives in woodlands, farmland, and even cities. Their bushy tails, known as "brushes," help with balance and keep them warm in winter. Foxes communicate with an impressive range of sounds, including eerie nighttime screams, which are often mistaken for something far more sinister!

  • The following has been added as per the new General Product Safety Regulation update December 2024, from the EU Commission.

    Safety Disclaimer for Crochet Patterns

Crocheting blankets, accessories, garments, decor, or other crochet products is a fun and rewarding craft. However, it’s essential to follow every step of the pattern carefully to ensure that the finished product is both functional and safe. Please note that, as with any handmade item, there are inherent risks when recreating these patterns. By following all instructions closely and taking appropriate safety measures, you can minimize potential hazards.

Safety with Young Children, Animals, and Adults

    • Always use child- and pet-safe materials when creating items for children or pets, particularly for toys, blankets, or any item likely to be chewed, pulled, or handled roughly.

    • Ensure the final product is properly constructed, with securely fastened joins and woven-in ends, to prevent unraveling or loose threads that could pose a choking or entanglement hazard.

    • For small embellishments such as buttons or beads, avoid their use on items intended for children under three years old or pets, as these can present choking hazards.

    Blanket Safety for Babies

    • Temperature Regulation: Babies are not as effective at regulating their temperature, and overheating increases the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). When creating blankets for babies, consider the yarn's warmth and breathability to ensure it is suitable for the intended environment.

    • Safe Sleeping Guidance: Blankets should be tucked no higher than the baby’s shoulders, and their feet should be placed at the end of the crib or bed. This minimizes the risk of the baby’s face becoming covered by loose bedding.

    • For further advice, refer to the safe sleeping guidelines provided by The Lullaby Trust.

    Handling Tools Safely

    • When working with sharp tools such as scissors, sewing needles, or crochet hooks, handle them carefully and keep them out of reach of children and pets.

    • Accidental cuts or injuries can occur if tools are not used properly. Always store tools safely when not in use, ensuring they are secured in a suitable storage container or area.

    Important Note

By purchasing and using this pattern, you acknowledge that you are responsible for the construction, use, and safety of the completed item. I am not liable for any accidents, injuries, or damages caused by the finished product or the tools used during its creation. This includes, but is not limited to, blankets, accessories, garments, decor items, or other crochet creations, whether for children, adults, or animals.
