The Technicolour Tile Coaster – Crochet Pattern

Take a moment to think back to the first time you saw a rainbow. Do you remember the feeling of wonder and amazement you felt? As you work on our Technicolor Tile Coaster pattern, we want you to tap into that same feeling of joy and excitement. With its bold rainbow stripes and playful design, this pattern is sure to inspire feelings of happiness and creativity.

Using small amounts of yarn, this scrap-busting project is not only perfect for using up leftover yarn, but it's also a fun and rewarding project for intermediate-level crocheters. Each coaster measures 4 inches square, making them the perfect size for protecting your surfaces from hot beverages or adding a decorative touch to your home decor.

The pattern is written in US crochet terms and has been pattern tested, so you can be confident in your crochet skills as you make your own set of Technicolor Tile Coasters. If you get stuck, don't worry - pattern support is available to help you along the way.

So why not grab your 3mm crochet hook and start creating your own set of Technicolor Tile Coasters? They're a practical and stylish addition to any home and make a great gift for friends and family. Don't forget to share your creations with us using the hashtag #technicolourtilecoaster - we can't wait to see what you come up with!

Five benefits of crocheting a scrap-busting project:

  1. It's environmentally friendly: Using up leftover yarn means that you're reducing waste and being kinder to the environment.

  2. It's cost-effective: Making use of scraps means you don't have to buy new yarn for each project, saving you money in the long run.

  3. It's creative: Working with different colours and textures can lead to unique and unexpected combinations that can make your project one-of-a-kind.

  4. It's versatile: Scrap-busting projects can range from small items like coasters to larger projects like blankets, allowing you to choose a project that fits your skill level and time constraints.

  5. It's satisfying: Seeing your scraps turn into a beautiful finished project can give you a sense of accomplishment and satisfaction that's hard to beat.

My Inspiration

The inspiration behind the Technicolor Tile Coaster pattern comes from my love of rainbows. There's something so joyful and uplifting about those colourful arcs in the sky, and I wanted to bring that same sense of happiness and playfulness to my crochet work. Did you know that a rainbow is actually a full circle, but we can only see the top half from the ground? Or that rainbows can appear in other atmospheric conditions, like fog or mist? Fun facts like these made me even more fascinated by rainbows and inspired me to create a design that captured their vibrant energy. The diagonal stripes in this pattern, made using intarsia crochet, remind me of the way rainbows stretch across the sky. Using a grey background makes the rainbow colours pop even more, just like how a stormy sky can make the colours of a rainbow stand out even brighter.

If you're new to crochet or just need a refresher on some basic techniques, don't worry! The Technicolor Tile Coaster pattern comes with some handy video tutorials to help guide you through the process. These tutorials cover everything from making a slip knot to changing colours when using single crochet.

One of the techniques covered is the foundation single crochet stitch, which is a great alternative to starting with a chain and single crocheting into it. This stitch creates a foundation row of single crochet stitches and a chain at the same time, making it perfect for projects like coasters where you need a sturdy base. With these video tutorials, you'll be able to master these techniques and create beautiful, colourful coasters in no time.
