Let me introduce you to one of my favourite crochet habits: the gifting stash.

A gifting stash is simply a collection of finished, ready-to-go handmade items, sitting patiently in a drawer (or a rather optimistic pile in the corner of your craft room), just waiting for the right moment to be gifted.

And honestly? It’s a total game-changer.

Gone are the days of the awkward last-minute invite, where you’re frantically googling “gift ideas for tonight” at 4pm. Gone are the days of someone turning up on your doorstep with a beautifully wrapped something, while you stand there empty-handed, mentally scrambling through your kitchen cupboards for anything vaguely gift-shaped. If you’re anything like me — someone who has a talent for putting her foot in it socially — a gifting stash is your safety net.

But it’s not just about avoiding embarrassment (though that’s a very real bonus). A handmade gift from your stash is thoughtful. It’s personal. It represents hours of your time, care, and skill — and that’s something no last-minute trip to the shops can replicate. When you hand someone something you’ve made, you’re not just giving them an object, you’re giving them a piece of your time and attention. That means something.

Why variety is your best friend

The real magic of a gifting stash happens when you build it out with variety in mind. Think about the range of gifting moments life throws at you — you’ll want your stash to be ready for all of them:

• Adults and kids — because you never know who you’ll need to gift for next
• Seasonally appropriate pieces — a summery gift can feel a bit odd handed over in December
• A baby shower gift or two — these invites always seem to appear with surprisingly little notice
• Something wedding-suitable — elegant, neutral, and ready to wrap the moment an invite lands on your doormat

And if there’s one time of year a well-stocked gifting stash truly earns its keep, it’s the festive period. Between work do’s, school gift exchanges, neighbours popping round with mince pies, and family visits you didn’t quite plan for, having a little collection of gift-ready makes on hand turns December from stressful to genuinely joyful.

The perfect excuse to stashbust

Here’s the best part — building a gifting stash doesn’t have to mean buying new yarn. In fact, it’s one of the best excuses you’ll ever have to dig into your stash and finally use up those leftover balls that have been quietly judging you from the cupboard.

Smaller gift-sized projects are perfect for using up oddments, part-balls, or that one skein you bought on a whim and never quite found a project for. It’s a lovely way to build your stash and clear space for new yarn purchases — win-win.

When your stash outgrows you (literally)

Of course, life moves on — tastes change, styles evolve, and sometimes your stash simply grows faster than your circle of gift-worthy occasions. When that happens, don’t let finished pieces sit forgotten in a box. Consider donating them to a local charity shop or cause.

I gave my mum a handmade hat as her Secret Santa last year, and it’s stuck with me ever since — my local charity shop actually celebrates the beautiful handmade hats they receive each year. It’s a lovely reminder that even if a piece doesn’t end up exactly where you first imagined, it can still bring real joy to someone.

A gifting stash in action

I still remember the time my husband’s friend invited us to his baby’s christening — a lovely, but very last-minute invite, for someone he hadn’t seen in years. No time to shop, no time to panic. Instead, my girls had a whale of a time rifling through my gifting stash, debating which baby blanket was “the one.” We turned up with a gift that felt personal and considered, and nobody would have guessed it was a last-minute invite at all.

Then there was the time my sister-in-law — who lives a long way away and we rarely get to see — turned up on our doorstep completely unannounced with Christmas gifts in hand. I had nothing for her. Nothing, that is, except a little stash of crocheted chocolate orange covers I’d made “just in case” (because is there anything more Christmas than a chocolate orange?). Crisis very much averted.

And that hat I mentioned for my mum’s Secret Santa? My local charity shop displays all their donated handmade hats on mannequin heads on a stand right in the centre of the shop each year — it’s genuinely lovely to see, and it’s exactly why I never feel bad passing on stash pieces I know I won’t get to.

Where to keep your gifting stash

A gifting stash is only as useful as your ability to actually find something in it when you need it. My approach is simple: everything lives in a Kallax box in my hallway. The location never changes, so when I need something, I always know exactly where to look first — a bit like Dana K. White’s approach to organising: “where would I first look for this?” Store it there, every time, and you’ll never lose track of it.

A couple of practical must-haves:

• Keep it dust-proof. If a piece might sit in your stash for months before it finds its person, you don’t want all that hard work looking grubby by the time it’s gifted.
• Keep it sealed. A closable container also helps deter pests — nobody wants to discover that moths got to a gift before its recipient did.
• Set a “too full” point. When the box gets snug, that’s my cue to donate a few pieces on — which brings us neatly back to the earlier point about passing things on to a good home.
